There is nothing like a good roast beef sandwich with potato chips for a lazy afternoon lunch, easy to prepare, quite a filler and tastes like heaven. The roast beef sandwich is a sandwich that is made out of sliced cold roast beef or sometimes beef loaf. This style of sandwich often comes with sliced roast beef layered inside a hamburger bun with sliced cheese, lettuce or any other green salad, red onion and topped with horseradish sauce which is the most common ingredient of this sandwich.

“A true taste of South Dakota”- as said by many critics in 1930s, roast beef sandwich is old and one can trace it as far back as 1870s. In 1900, the dish was described by The Washington Post as “unattractive” and as “a tired ark in a gravy flood”.

The bread, the lettuce, the sauce and the cheese can be of any type, roast beef sandwich can be served cold as well as hot, depends upon your liking.

Here is a simple recipe of roast beef sandwich, try it and let me know what you think of it.

Ingredients
 
Roast Beef Thinly Sliced, 6 Nos.
Whole Grain Bread, 4 Slice
Cheese Slice, 2 nos.
Small Red Onion Thinly Slice, 1 no.
Lettuce (Iceberg, Escarole, Arugula, Green Leaf, etc.), 5 or 6 Leaves
Balsamic Reduction, ½ Tablespoon
Mayonnaise, 4 Tablespoon
Horseradish Sauce, 2 Tablespoon
Salt, to Taste
Pepper Powder, to Taste
Method of Preparation.
  • Thinly slice the red onion and keep it in the deep freeze for 15 minutes, only if you are serving cold sandwich, this will make the onions crunchy. If serving hot, the onions can be caramelized in honey mustard sauce.
  • In a small bowl, take the mayonnaise, horseradish sauce, salt and pepper mix well and keep it aside.
  • Toast the bread slices using a bread or oven toaster or on a hot plate.
  • Now take the sauce mixture and spread equally on one side of each toasted bread with the help of a butter knife.
  • To assemble, take one half of the bread with spread side facing up, top it with roast beef slice, 3 for each sandwich.
  • Top it with a slice of cheese, onion rings and lettuce in the said order.
  • Pour little balsamic reduction as shown in the video here. You can use any other sauce of your liking,
  • Sprinkle salt and pepper if required, finish by placing the other slice of bread on top of the lettuce, side with sauce spread facing down. Sometime fresh powdered chili pepper is sprinkled for seasoning.
  • The roast beef sandwich is ready to be served, it can be enjoyed with potato chips, French fries, or hot and thick chicken soup.

 

There are some other ingredients such as tomato slices and pickles which are used in roast beef sandwich but are not very common.
